This is an itinerary in the Marecchia Valley that links St Francis’ Way from Rimini to La Verna, to places with a long-standing presence of Franciscans and connected to important figures linked to the history born of the charism of St Francis or to the history of the Franciscan order or to figures born here. In particular, Brother Matteo da Bascio, founder of the Capuchins and Brother Orazio Olivieri from Pennabilli, who was a missionary in Tibet in the 18th century and is a figure still remembered and respected in the Tibetan Buddhist world.

Walkers will also discover beautiful and authentic places; ancient villages with an important history, such as Pennabilli, seat of the Diocese of San Marino-Montefeltro, or Badia Tedalda, an important medieval centre linked to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

These routes link up with St Francis’ Way in San Leo and at Viamaggio Pass, where pilgrims can decide whether to continue to La Verna, or head south towards Gubbio and Assisi along Francis’ Way.

These routes also include an important link to La Verna from San Marino, which joins St Francis’ Way at San Leo.

The stages are described in the second edition of the guide to the Way and are indicated here with GPX tracks.

San Marino city - San Leo

San Leo - Pennabilli

Pennabilli - Badia Tedalda

Badia Tedalda - Viamaggio Pass

CAUTION

The initial part of the stage from Badia Tedalda to Viamaggio Pass has been affected by recent construction work to build a methane pipeline, with interruptions on several stretches. As of September 2022, the path has only been partially reopened, whilst the last few kilometres are difficult to negotiate due to the ground still being uneven and a lack of signposts. We therefore recommend using public transport from Badia to the pass, until the route has been completely reopened.
